Float on… London Luton Airport’s ‘LLA Lilo-brary’ keeps plastic out of paradise

Have you ever bought a lilo or pool toy on holiday, then dumped it before travelling home? No judgement, 51% of us have. But our ‘buy and bin’ inflatable habit adds up to around 54.5 million abandoned holiday items every year, which is enough to circle the world twice* when laid end to end. That’s why we’ve come up with a less bin, more swim campaign for London Luton Airport.

Our LLA Lilo Exchange is offering free second-hand inflatables to an estimated 1.3 million departing passengers at the airport this summer with free Fast Track airport passes for those who return them.

The campaign is part of our ongoing brand communications strategy to position LLA as the UK’s simplest and friendliest airport with a commitment to sustainability.

We packaged this up with compelling data, identifying the top 10‘buy and bin’ holiday items, why they’re abandoned and the fact that 61% are up for using pre-loved items instead. And vibrant lilo-brary imagery brings the campaign to life.

It’s an open and shut case of sun, sand, sea and sustainability. See you on the beach, we’ve bagsied an inflatable doughnut!

*Calculating the twice round the world figure:
Total number of dumped inflatables = 54.5m, smallest average lilo length = 170cm
54.5m x 170 = 9,180,000,000cm which equals 57,042 miles
Once around the world = 24,901 miles, so twice around the world = 49,802 miles (leaving a 7,768 mile margin for error for smaller items e.g. armbands)
