1,000 mistletoe kisses at Borough Market

This Christmas, Tin Man helped Borough Market celebrate its 1,000th year by installing 1000 individual pieces of mistletoe in a breath taking Christmas display and inviting 1,000 couples down to the market for a world record-breaking mistletoe kiss.  And to add a little twist we partnered with physics expert David Farmer from The Royal Holloway University to find a way of harnessing the power of kisses and connect the circuit of Christmas lights, causing the lights to switch on as the couples kissed. The campaign increased footfall, sales and delivered 54 pieces of coverage over 2 weeks including a 4 min segment on The One Show, ITV News and BBC London! The market also had over 1m more impressions than the week before and 1,529 more interactions on social.  Over100% of people questioned knew it was Borough’s 1000th birthday and 93% felt the market was becoming the hub of the community.

Under a breathtaking ceiling of 1,000 hand-tied bunches of mistletoe, families, friends and couples gathered in their festive best.

Physics Expert David Farmer harnessed the power of kisses to connect the circuit of Christmas lights, causing the lights to switch on as the couples kissed.

Donald Hyslop, Chair of Borough Market Trustees, said:? “A market has always been a central meeting place within the community, and a place that people connect, and share food and drink. Connecting people is very much part of Borough and runs through everything we do, so it made perfect sense to carry the theme through to our Christmas lights switch on!”

There was a heavy media presence at the event, securing broadcast coverage on The One Show, ITV News at 6 and ITV News at 10. 90% of visitors survey felt the market was diverse and modern and 100% were aware of Borough’s 1000th birthday.
