We’re over the moon here at Tin Man towers to announce our latest campaign for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The aim of the campaign is to help encourage children’s interest in engineering and technology, particularly in aerospace.

So, with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing coming up, we commissioned research that revealed that nearly half of under 16s believe a human colony will be established on Mars in their lifetime.

We used the study to launch a competition with the iconic Beano comic for children to design a product for life on Mars.  The winning design will be made into a 3D prototype and sent to the edge of space using a weather balloon. The winner and two runners-up will be invited to attend the space launch and see their design head up above the clouds.

For expert advice we looked to IET Young Engineer of the Year and aspiring astronaut, Sophie Harker, aged 27 for thoughts on pursuing engineer as a career.
